By appointment - her every need

Valentine Low12 April 2012

They are magical words: By Appointment to HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

They say more about a firm than advertising ever can - but the royal warrants in her name also say much about the Queen Mother.

At the time of her death there were 221 of them, ranging from expensive jewellers to her local newsagent in Scotland, all offering a fascinating insight into her world.

Hidden among them are such obscurities as the saddlers who supplied her racing colours, a field sports outfitters, a dairy, and the company that supplied her with marzipan.

There is even a warrant for Weetabix.

To earn a royal warrant, a firm must have supplied the Queen, Queen Mother, Duke of Edinburgh or Prince of Wales for five continuous years. They may then apply to the Lord Chamberlain's office, and if successful, can hang the "By Appointment" sign above their door and add the appropriate coat of arms to their stationery, vehicles and products. A warrant is normally valid for 10 years.

Valentine Low takes a look at eight warrant holders to the Queen Mother.

Corsetière
June Kenton was corsetière by royal appointment to the Queen Mother, which meant she fitted the Queen Mother for her bras.

Mrs Kenton owns, with husband Harold, Mayfair-based Rigby and Peller, which has had the royal warrant since 1960.

She would measure the Queen Mother at Clarence House. "One time I said to her, 'You look wonderful in lilac.' She said, 'It was rather nice, wasn't it? But I do prefer myself in blue. When I wave in the back of a car they can see me so much better.'"

Newsagent
James Shepherd was a vitally important person in the Queen Mother's life whenever she was at Birkhall on the Balmoral estate: he kept her supplied with the Racing Post.

The newsagent and sweetshop in Ballater, above, was also something of a fixture in the lives of Princes William and Harry when they stayed there as young boys.

"Prince Charles has been in the shop a couple of times," said Mr Shepherd, 38. "When his boys were younger they were in here on an almost daily basis."
