Cable’s staff ‘beat Whitehall payout cap’

Thousands of civil servants are being offered the chance to apply for redundancy packages denied to many of their colleagues.

About 3,000 staff in Vince Cable's Business Department are being offered voluntary redundancy packages which are less generous than previously but still more financially attractive than new terms to be introduced in October.

Cabinet Office sources played down a report that other departments had been told to wait for the new cap of 15 months of salary to be imposed on payouts, compared with the current limit of three years' pay, or six-and-a-half years for those who joined the civil service before 1987.

One report suggested £2 billion could be saved under the new terms.
