Cyprus newspaper boss gunned down

12 April 2012

Three men have been arrested in Cyprus after the murder of the island's most powerful publisher.

Andy Hadjicostis, 41, director of Dias media group, which includes the conservative daily Simerini, and a TV and radio station, was shot as he stepped out of his car outside his home in the capital Nicosia.

Ethnic Greek and Turkish leaders are in talks to reunify the island, but the government ruled out political motives behind the killing to stop speculation that it was intended to create instability.

Mr Hadjicostis's group was supportive of the peace process but expressed concern that the Greek Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias could make too many concessions to the Turkish side.
