Death-drive worker injures 10 in Japan factory

12 April 2012

A Japanese factory worker ran over former colleagues in a car rampage around a Mazda plant where he was employed for eight days, killing one and injuring 10.

Toshiaki Hikiji, 42, stunned the country with his attack in Hiroshima Prefecture, coming two years after another car worker drove into a Tokyo crowd and then stabbed onlookers, killing seven.

Hikiji, who was also armed with a knige, fled in his car but was caught and charged with attempted murder.

Japanese media said he had a grudge against the firm after he was let go in April. He drove past security at the factory gate and sped into the plant as workers were arriving in the morning. The dead worker was named as Hiroshi Hamada, 39, and one man was in a critical condition.

Mazda said Hikiji had not been fired but left of his own accord, citing personal reasons.
