Don't drive into town this Sunday

Tower Bridge will be one of dozens of roads closed to traffic on Sunday as London celebrates Car Free Day.

Mayor Ken Livingstone encouraged residents to walk across the bridge and to visit the new City Hall nearby, which is open to visitors as part of Open House weekend.

Mr Livingstone said he had walked across Tower Bridge, which will be closed from 6am until midnight, during last year's Car Free Day. "It's an absolutely amazing experience," he said. "Londoners should also take the chance to come to City Hall."

Events on the bridge take place from 2pm to 6pm, when it will be taken over by street performers, bands, giant games and two beaches.

More than 20 London boroughs are taking part in Car Free Day, part of the In Town Without My Car initiative, an international event involving more than 1,000 towns and cities to promote sustainable transport.

Other events in the capital include the closure of the roads between the British Museum in Bloomsbury and Euston Road for a community street festival with Michael Palin, Bill Oddie and Esther Rantzen.

Croydon High Street will be closed from 10am to 4pm, while Hackney will close part of Mare Street from 8am to 8pm for a carnival. Haringey will close Park Road and Middle Lane in Crouch End from midday to 5pm, while Lambeth will shut Sunny Hill Road in Streatham from 7am to 7pm.
