Extradition approved for honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani

12 April 2012

The British man accused of organising the murder of his wife on their honeymoon in South Africa can be extradited to stand trial, the Home Secretary ruled this afternoon.

Theresa May today signed the documents approving the extradition of Bristol businessman Shrien Dewani.

His bride Anni, 28, was shot when a cab the couple were travelling in was hijacked in a Cape Town township last November. Mr Dewani, 31, claims two gunmen hijacked their cab, bundled him out and drove off with her.

He denies any involvement in the killing and has been fighting extradition proceedings.

His lawyers argued he was mentally unfit to face trial but his plea was rejected by a judge on August 10.

South African prosecutors say they have evidence that he paid a Cape Town taxi driver to arrange his wife's murder.

Today the Home Secretary rubber-stamped the extradition order. He has 14 days to appeal.
