Fewer Names at Lloyd's of London

12 April 2012

THE number of Names taking part in the Lloyd's insurance market has fallen again despite sharp rises in premiums resulting from the 11 September attacks on the US.

There will be 2,490 Names underwriting this year, almost 400 fewer than in 2001. The slump extends the downward trend triggered by the huge losses of the 1980s, when there were about 34,000 Names.

Lloyd's has said it will accept a record £12.3bn of business in 2002, up from £11bn last year. Premiums have risen by up to 80%, even more for aviation cover.
