First woman Bandmaster in Cavalry was inspired by TV

Career highlight: WO1 Esther Freeborn at the Hyde Park barracks today

The first female Bandmaster in the 350-year history of the Household Cavalry says she is honoured to hold the prestigious post.

Warrant Officer Class One Esther Freeborn today said she joined the Territorial Army at 19 after being inspired by the Robson Green and Jerome Flynn ITV series Soldier Soldier.

WO1 Freeborn, 35, completed a gruelling five-month course to become part of the Household Cavalry's Mounted Regiment. She will be second-in-command to the regiment's director of music.

Although more usually seen with a flute or conducting baton than a rifle, WO1 Freeborn is also an excellent markswoman and has put her name forward to serve on the frontline.

She said: "It is a great honour to have been appointed to the Household Cavalry as the first female bandmaster.

"To serve and be part of such a highly regarded regiment is without doubt the highlight of my career."
