Hotel plunge dad's murder charge

13 April 2012

A British man who fell from a hotel balcony in Greece with his two children has been charged with murder after his six-year-old son died in the incident.

The man, whose two-year-old daughter survived the fall, has also been charged with attempted murder.

The young girl is in hospital in a stable condition following the fall on the island of Crete, hospital officials said.

The 32-year-old man also remains in hospital under police guard. He was reported to be in a stable condition.

He fell from a fourth-floor hotel balcony with the two children, on Tuesday evening.

The man and his two children have not been named.

The incident occurred in Ierapetra, a popular holiday destination on the south coast of the island.

The father was said to have travelled from Britain for a two-week holiday.

Panayiotis Sparakis, director of the Agios Nikolaos hospital, which provided the initial treatment, said: "Unfortunately one of the children died.

"The father says he doesn't remember anything, and claimed he was confused and had been drinking... This is a case that is truly tragic."
