Library books stolen by Joe Orton go on display

12 April 2012

Library books stolen and defaced by Joe Orton are to go on show in a new museum dedicated to the history of Islington.

The playwright was jailed for six months in 1962 for stealing the collection, which will appear alongside other quirky treasures including a bust of Lenin, who once lived in Clerkenwell.

The Islington Museum, mostly funded by a grant of more than £900,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, opens today in St John Street.
