Liverpool Street train is derailed

Dick Murray12 April 2012

A passenger train came off the tracks shortly after leaving London today.

First reports said one passenger had been slightly injured when three carriages of the four-car train were derailed.

The 13.19 Liverpool Street to Cambridge service derailed as it was approaching Cheshunt station. A spokesman for West Anglia Great Northern (WAGN) warned of "severe congestion" for commuters this evening using Liverpool Street station. The derailed carriages are blocking both main lines.

Passengers are advised to use alternative services on Great Northern routes out of King's Cross where possible.

Buses are also being laid on for Stansted Airport passengers. The WAGN spokesman said: "The train was slowing down and was travelling at under 20mph as it approached Cheshunt station.

"It derailed. with three of the four carriages coming off the tracks."

One male passenger suffered an injured knee. Crash investigators are at the scene and will study points or track defect as possible causes.
