London backpacker missing on Skye

13 April 2012

A search was due to resume today for a London backpacker missing on the Isle of Skye.

Dr Timothy Derrick, 40, was understood to have been travelling around the island and was last seen five days ago.

Police on the Scottish island were alerted when he failed to check out of Sligachan Bunkhouse, in the village of Sligachan, on Thursday.

Northern Constabulary confirmed a new search would be taking place early this morning after police, Skye Mountain Rescue Team and Stornoway Coastguard helicopter yesterday scoured the Cuillin mountains in a bid to find any clue to the missing man's whereabouts.

A spokesman said: "There will be a search commencing in the morning. We don't know the scale of the search or the area it will cover. It is likely to be on a smaller scale than yesterday."

Dr Derrick, of Southwark Bridge Road, south London, arrived in Skye on August 12 and checked into the bunkhouse last Tuesday. He was understood to have intended to travel to Edinburgh before returning to his home this week.

The missing man, whose family are aware of his disappearance, was wearing blue jeans and a cream jacket with black patches on the shoulders when last seen.
