'London needs 14-lane M-ways'

A series of mega motorways up to 14 lanes wide should be built around London and between the capital and the North, government commissioned studies will recommend next year.

They could result in 10-lane roads forming the heart of the motorway network, starting on the M25 and along parts of the M1 and M6 to Manchester.

Motorway widening plus the addition of parallel local access lanes could create 14 lanes along some stretches in a bid to cut congestion and improve road safety.
