Mayor urges capital to be greener as he opens recycling plant
A new recycling plant for London was being opened by Boris Johnson today.
The materials recovery facility, which will process up to 250,000 tonnes of dry recyclables a year, is at Lea Riverside to where it was moved to make way for the 2012 Olympics.
The Mayor said: "On World Environment Day, I am raising the bar for Londoners and encouraging them to make the effort to recycle more, both at home and at work.
"The capital's businesses are keen to be greener and recycle more but we need to be able to meet this growing demand. This state-of-the-art facility is a welcome boost to my goal of sending less rubbish to landfill and making London a world leader in recycling."
Owned and run by family firm Bywaters, the plant is part of a £30million relocation to the 9.2 acre site. The building covers more than 187,000 sq feet.
Gareth Blacker, director of the Olympic legacy development team at the London Development Agency, said: "Bywaters is a great example of a business that embraced the Olympic relocation process to improve and expand. By working closely with the LDA we were able to identify relocation sites that would help develop their business and in turn helped the LDA deliver the Olympic site on time and on budget."
