Milkman jailed for restaurant killing

13 April 2012

A 21-year-old milkman was jailed for eight years today for taking part in a "terrfying" attack on an Indian restaurant which resulted in the death of its owner.

Maninderpal Singh, of Southall, west London, was found guilty in May of the manslaughter of Imitiaz Syed, 39, in January last year.

Mr Syed was attacked by a gang of youths wielding metal poles and sticks after windows of his Lahore Village restaurant, in Southall, were smashed.

This followed an earlier incident in which windows were smashed.

He died in the arms of his nephew, saying: "The story has come to its end," the Old Bailey was told.

Judge Brian Barker told Singh: "You were centrally and deeply involved in a series of events which led to the death of a much-respected and hard-working man.

"I am sure this death has caused much shock and much outrage in the local community.

"This was a pre-planned and concerted attack by young men designed to cause maximum damage and terrify customers."

Singh was also jailed for three years concurrently for violent disorder.
