Mother jailed for loading daughter's riot booty into car

12 April 2012

A mother who helped her teenage daughter unload a shopping trolley of looted goods into her car has been jailed for 10 months.

Bookkeeper Denise Carnegie, 41, claimed she was driving around looking for her 16-year-old daughter after seeing television appeals urging parents to find out where their children were.

But when she found her she helped hoard the booty plundered from Debenhams in Clapham Junction on the third day of the riots on August 9. She later told police she was "confused" about where the items had come from.

Paul Rattigan, prosecuting at Inner London crown court, said Carnegie, of Tooting, who admitted receiving stolen goods, was traced through her car registration number. Police found items with their security tags all over her property.

Judge Robert Fraser said she had shown "a remarkable lack of any sense of parental responsibility".
