Murdered model's mother backs Brown

Victim: Sally Anne Bowman’s killer was caught by a DNA sample
12 April 2012

THE mother of murdered London model Sally Anne Bowman is backing Gordon Brown in a row over DNA records.

Linda Bowman will join the Prime Minister and Home Secretary Alan Johnson in a campaign event on Friday.

An election row has erupted over whether DNA records can be retained for those not convicted of a crime. The Tories say they will block legislation that would allow records to be kept for six years, saying there should be a maximum of three years and only for serious crimes.

The killer of 18-year-old Sally Anne, Mark Dixie, was caught through a DNA sample provided by him over a separate offence involving a fight.
Mr Johnson said Dixie could have escaped justice under the Tory rules.
"It is likely that this man would not have been caught and that Sally Anne's innocent boyfriend would have been the main suspect," he said.
