Joggers frustrated by tourists and cyclists blocking their way on the South Bank have welcomed the launch of London's first dedicated running lane.

Cancer Research UK, which will open its kilometre-long Thames-side track at Tower Bridge tomorrow, is calling for the cycle-style lanes to be established across the capital.

A new poll by the charity shows that more than a quarter of runners in London find dawdling pedestrians a problem. Joggers on the South Bank today praised the one-day pilot scheme.

Kylie Williams, 37, a sales trainer from Clapham, said: "I run along the South Bank every day and it's a nightmare.

"The tourist crowds here are huge. In the afternoons and evenings it is really hard to manoeuvre through them all.

"Cyclists get their own lanes all across London so it would make sense for runners to get similar treatment."

Danya Eltchelebi, 27, a graphic designer from Wimbledon, said: "It's such a popular area for
runners. Special lanes would make it all a lot easier."

Rahul Desai, 28, an asset manager from Marylebone, added: "Runners and pedestrians would benefit massively. When I'm running I'm always having to stop to avoid people. There are also a lot of kids about and the number of runners makes it dangerous for them."

TV presenter and running enthusiast Nell McAndrew, who will help launch the Run 10k Running Lane, said: "Outdoor running is a fantastic way of keeping fit but in busy areas it can be difficult. The lane is a great way to fully appreciate the benefits of running with great views, fresh air and a clear route so I can keep my pace."

The lane will be open to all runners from 8am to 6pm tomorrow. Cancer Research UK set it up to launch its Run 10k autumn fundraising events.
