Police seize cash tills stolen in gang raid on bike shop

12 April 2012

Cash registers stolen when a mob of 50 masked youths smashed their way into a bike shop have been found by police.

The gang ransacked Evans Cycle Shop in Chalk Farm during the riots, also stealing up to 100 bicycles worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Police carrying out raids on the nearby Denton Estate in Camden in connection with looting found the two registers along with a haul of weapons, car keys, a sat-nav and a mobile phone.

The Met says it has arrested 1,580 people so far over the disorder last week, 330 of whom are juveniles. A total of 923 people have been charged.

David Cheek, manager of Evans Cycle Shop, said the gang had tried to steal a third register but left it in the shop.

He said: "It was obviously too much for them to take, with all the debris everywhere. They must have thought there was a lot of money inside, but it was just a float. The bikes were worth a lot, however."

He was speaking during a surprise visit by Labour leader Ed Miliband, who congratulated him on being open so quickly.

Commenting on his famous visitor, Mr Cheek said: "We were given no warning - I was serving a customer and he was just standing there. It was great to see him offering his support."

Meanwhile, police have appealed for the owner of a Bvlgari ring seized during a raid in Notting Hill to come forward.

The piece of designer jewellery is believed to have been looted as criminals targeted restaurants and pubs during rioting.

Ten people were arrested during a series of raids in the area yesterday, Scotland Yard said.
