Prostitute scandal peer leaves son £12m

13 April 2012

Lord Lambton, a Tory Defence Minister who resigned after being photographed smoking cannabis while in bed with two prostitutes, left nearly £12 million in his will.

Lambton, who died aged 84 in December, was exposed by conman Colin Levy in 1973 after a hidden camera was used to photograph him in bed with Levy's 26-year-old wife Norma and another woman at a flat in Maida Vale, North-West London.

The peer left his entire estate to his only son Edward, the 7th Earl of Durham. But there was no provision for his five daughters, including author Lucinda Lambton.

The Norma Levy scandal rivalled the Profumo case of a decade before. It emerged that Levy was one of 15 prostitutes run by a society madam whose clients included the Leader of the House of Lords, Earl Jellicoe, who was forced to resign.

To escape the notoriety, Lord Lambton, who split from his wife Bindy after the scandal, moved to Italy.

Although the photographs were not published at the time, he resigned from Ted Heath's Government for 'personal and health reasons' after he was shown with them during a police interview.

The second son of the 5th Earl of Durham, Lambton was born into an immensely wealthy family and was one of Britain's richest peers.

Among those he later entertained at his Tuscan villa were Prince Charles and Tony Blair.
