Former US president Ronald Reagan has been honoured with the unveiling of a bronze statue in London.

Foreign Secretary William Hague and former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were at the ceremony to mark the 100 year anniversary of the president's birth.

Today's tribute to President Reagan, coincides with America's fourth of July celebrations, was the culmination of a week of events across Europe to mark the centenary of his birth in 1911.

A controversial figure while in office, President Reagan's stature grew after the fall of the Berlin Wall, in which he played a key role.

"You may be sure that the people of London will take this statue to their hearts," predicted Mr Hague. "Those who stop and look will be reminded of President Reagan's extraordinary achievements, and all that he stood for."

President Reagan died in 2004 at 93. After a successful career as a movie actor, appearing in over 50 films, Reagan was elected governor of California. He ousted Jimmie Carter in 1980 to become the 40th President of the USA, serving between 1981 and 1989.

His historic achievement was his role in the defeat the old Soviet empire and end the Cold War, liberating eastern Europe. The bronze stands opposite a statue of Word War II commander Dwight D Eisenhower, which was unveiled by Lady Thatcher in 1989.
