Restoration of galleries lets the light shine on Rembrandt

Artist’s friend: dancer Jane Avril by Toulouse-Lautrec
12 April 2012

The Wallace Collection's suite of galleries showing masterpieces by artists including Rembrandt and Rubens are to be refurbished in the final part of a 20-year plan.

The improvements, announced today, are being spearheaded by director Rosalind Savill. The work will restore the original height and natural light to the Dutch galleries in the East Wing, altered in the Seventies.

The plans were unveiled as the Wallace joined the Courtauld Gallery to announce their respective programmes for 2011.

The Wallace's shows will include an exhibition on influential French artist Antoine Watteau and new pieces by contemporary goldsmith Kevin Coates.

A summer offering at the Courtauld will be an exhibition on Jane Avril, a friend as well as a dancing girl subject of Toulouse-Lautrec. It will include a poster he made for her when she and her troupe visited the Palace Theatre in London.
