Shoppers' £4bn online spree

Record numbers of shoppers will beat the Christmas rush and buy gifts online, experts predict.

More than £4billion will be spent over the Internet - double last year's figure.

And mail services expect to handle 40million packages bought online in the run-up to Christmas.

The e-retail body IMRG said: 'Convenience is the key.' The UK's 14million regular Internet shoppers are forecast to spend £15.7billion this year, mostly on books, CDs, electrical equipment and clothing.
