Shoppers set for £37bn spree

BRITONS are getting ready to spend £37bn this winter on clothes, Christmas presents and parties, research claims today.

More than two-thirds of people say they are worried about the high cost of the winter months, which set them back an average of £811 each, with a quarter saying it is a major concern.

One in six say Christmas is so expensive they would rather do without it, claims Direct Debit.

The biggest cost during winter is Christmas presents, with shoppers spending an average of £363 on gifts, while buying winter clothes costs about £162.

Buying food and decorations for Christmas will cost an average of £143, while parties will cost the same amount.
