Short backs 'freedom fighters'

Former Cabinet minister Clare Short has compared insurgents in Iraq to freedom fighters and likened their cause to the French Resistance in the Second World War, it emerged today.

The outspoken former international development-secretary also claimed the IRA had "never targeted civilians". She told the Dubai-based Gulf News she "understood" Arabs who embraced militancy. "The killing of civilians is always wrong ... but the cause is just," said the Labour MP for Birmingham Ladywood. "My father came from Northern Ireland ... I understand why people think 'I can't get justice in any other way'."
