Gabrielle Aplin, whose version of The Power of Love topped the charts after it featured in the John Lewis Christmas TV advert, is to perform an intimate gig in a stranger’s sitting room.
The singer, 20, will treat a competition winner and their friends to a 40-minute set in the comfort of their home. Her audience will watch her perform the Frankie Goes To Hollywood cover as well as her second single, Please Don’t Say You Love Me, which also entered the top 10, and material from her new album. The self-taught musician said: “I am really looking forward to it. The gig is going to be very intimate and if the winner is a really big fan it will be great to meet them and their friends. I can’t wait to perform in someone’s house as I really love meeting fans.”
The songwriter is best known for her ethereal rendition of Eighties classic The Power Of Love, used in the advert which followed an intrepid snowman’s journey across the country to buy his companion a pair of red gloves and matching scarf. Although it was Aplin’s major break, she started performing at 14 and had her own record label, Never Fade Records, by 17.
The competition, run by The Student Pocket Guide, is open to any further or higher education student in the UK and the gig will be performed on June 17. The winner will also enjoy free drinks, and cleaners will be sent to their home the next morning to clear up any mess. The gig can be watched live via YouTube channel SPGtv.
