Tamil hunger striker sues over ‘Big Mac’ claims

12 April 2012

A hunger striker at the centre of one of Britain's longest-running demonstrations today announced he is suing two newspapers over claims he was secretly eating McDonald's meals during the rally.

Parameswaran Subramanyam fasted in Parliament Square for 24 days after finding out that five of his relatives including his mother died in the Sri Lankan conflict. He and other Tamil supporters were urging the British Government to intervene in the country's civil war.

The 28-year-old has issued proceedings against The Daily Mail and The Sun about articles they wrote claiming he was tucking into Big Mac meals during his vigil in April last year.

Mr Subramanyam said he had been forced to sue for libel after allegations that food was smuggled into his tent.
