Teacher accused of 1980s pupil rape

A teacher raped one of his pupils and forced her to perform oral sex on him after spiriting her away from a school disco, a court heard today.

Kenneth Anbany drove the girl away from the Christmas party at the Devon school in the 1980s and took her to a secluded area before forcing himself on her, Exeter Crown Court was told.
The court heard that the now-retired teacher had paid the teenager "a great deal of attention" during lessons.

He admitted to police that he danced with the girl at the party but denied any wrongdoing.
Opening the prosecution case, barrister Richard Crabb said: "It is a clear case of a teacher taking advantage of a pupil in his charge for the sole purpose of his own sexual gratification."
He added: "He would comment on her looks, he would ask her personal questions about her private life. He would pester her to meet him after school. Sometimes he would put his arm around her at school.

"She never encouraged this attention and told people she felt uncomfortable about it."
He added that Anbany had accosted the girl at the party, which he had helped to arrange, begging her to meet him in private. She "naively" got into his car to talk to him, and he suddenly drove off, the court heard.

When he stopped the car nearby, Mr Crabb said, he assaulted her.

The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told only her husband and a close friend for the next 24 years. She finally went to the police after reading about Anbany on the internet in 2009.

He admitted at Exeter Crown Court in October that year to engaging in sex acts with a 15-year-old girl he drove to a secluded location.
