The 'c-thru' cucumbers with no skin to encumber them

13 April 2012

It is the perfect solution for those who like their cucumber sandwiches with neither skin nor too much effort.

A new variety of thin-skinned cucumbers is going on sale in supermarkets.

The salad vegetables (which are actually a fruit) do not have to be peeled, according to Sainsbury's spokesman Carla Ashmore.

'The skin is thinner, making it perfect for quick and easy preparation of sandwiches and salads alike,' she said.

The variety, which has been dubbed the c-thru- cumber, is crispier than conventional types, is translucent, and has a slightly sweet flavour.

The cucumber is believed to have originated in India and has been cultivated for at least 3,000 years in Western Asia. It was probably introduced to Europe by the Romans.

Records of cucumber cultivation appear in France in the 9th century and England in the 14th century.

The c-thru- cumber, which is smaller than a normal cucumber, is being sold in packs of two for  £1.19. The conventional varieties sell for about 75p.
