Tory peers lift block on Asylum Bill

The Government was this afternoon poised to push through plans to house thousands of asylum seekers in accommodation centres in the countryside, after a clash with the Lords appeared to have been resolved.

Tory peers threatening to block the measure - contained in the Asylum Bill - accepted a last-minute offer on extra checks from Home Secretary David Blunkett.

Conservative Party managers were aware that they could be blamed for "chaos" in the asylum system by sabotaging the measure.
