Trafalgar Square lions firm goes bust

12 April 2012

The art group that built many of London's most famous statues, including the lions in Trafalgar Square, today went bust.

Morris Singer Art Foundry has constructed public monuments for 150 years, but governments have reined in spending during the recession leaving it unable to survive. Its legacy includes the Chariot outside Parliament, the Figure of Justice on top of the Old Bailey and St George and the Dragon by Blackfriars Bridge.

The business has also collaborated with Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Administrators MCR are looking for someone to buy the company and its assets "as soon as possible". In 2005 the Morris Singer brand was acquired by Art Founders Limited in Braintree, Essex.
