Tube safety warning for drinkers

Indira Das-Gupta12 April 2012

London Underground is launching a public awareness campaign under the slogan, "Take a drink. Take the Tube. Take care", to help prevent accidents over the festive season. Last Christmas there were 71 incidents involving "alcohol-impaired" commuters, some resulting in deaths.

On 22 December last year, a young woman died after jumping onto the tracks to retrieve her mobile phone.

In another incident at Wembley Park, a drunk female commuter had to be rescued from the tracks after climbing into the tunnel in search of the ladies' loo.

Frances Low, director of the Tube's legal services, said: "Observe the same basic rules as you do during the rest of the year. Be careful on the escalators and on the platform and do not climb onto the tracks."
