Two dead and two critical after weekend shootings in the capital

Two men were killed and two others were critically injured in a series of shootings in London at the weekend.

Patrick Ford, 36, was shot dead outside the Sugar Lounge nightclub in Newham in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was hit in the chest and died at the scene.

Two other revellers, aged 26 and 27, were also shot but survived the attack, which took place in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They were both described as critical today.

In the early hours of Sunday morning 23-year-old Matthew Clement was shot dead in a quiet residential street in Lewisham.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene after people heard gunshots. Mr Clement died at the scene.

Detectives from Scotland Yard's Operation Trident team, which tackles gun crime in the capital's black community, is investigating both attacks.

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the Sugar Lounge shooting.

Police do not believe the attacks are related.

Detectives investigating the Sugar Lounge attack said they were hunting at least two gunmen.

Police believe there were gunshots inside the club where about 100 people were attending a birthday party.

As people fled outside one man was shot dead and then there were two further shooting incidents near-by.

Two men were shot in the head and both were said to be critically ill in hospital, one of them described as stable, the other in a life threatening condition.

Detective Inspector Steve Horsley said: "We have four crime scenes around the club and we are appealing for anyone who attended the party to contact us. We would also like to hear from anyone who was outside the club."
