Two men were arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found dying in the street, police said today.

Officers were called to Fairfield Street in Birkenhead, Merseyside, at 11.20pm last night after residents reported a disturbance.

Police found a van had hit a number of parked vehicles and its driver, 30, who has not been formally identified, was unconscious in the road.

He was taken by ambulance to Arrowe Park Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Merseyside Police said two men, aged in their 30s, were arrested on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody for questioning.

A spokesman added: "Detectives are treating this as an isolated incident and we have deployed extra patrols across the area to provide reassurance to the public."

A post mortem examination on the victim will be carried out today.

Anyone with information should call Wirral CID on 0151 777 2263 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
