United star injures girl in crash

13 April 2012

A teenage girl is in hospital after being knocked down by a car driven by Manchester United star Eric Djemba-Djemba.

The 22-year-old midfielder collided with 14-year-old Lauren Elms as he drove a Lincoln Navigator 4x4 vehicle through the Harpurhey area of Manchester.

She suffered a broken leg and suspected head injuries in the accident, which took place just before 8.30pm on Sunday.

She was taken to Booth Hall Children's Hospital and later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital at Pendlebury, which has a specialised neurological unit.

A spokeswoman for the hospital refused to give details of Lauren's treatment or condition as her family had requested privacy.

Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Greater Manchester Police will interview Djemba-Djemba, who is also a Cameroon international, but he was not thought to have been at fault.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "There was an accident on Rochdale Road in Harpurhey at 8.24pm on Sunday, in which a 14-year-old girl suffered a broken leg.

"We are investigating the accident and will be speaking to the driver as a matter of procedure.

"Early indications are that the girl may have stepped out in front of the car."
