War on middle class drug users

Scotland Yard's new chief today warned "weekend" drug users that they will feel the full force of the law.

Sir Ian Blair said that middle-class people who thought they could take cocaine in fashionable restaurants and at dinner parties were wrong and he signalled that police are prepared to raid London venues.

Sir Ian, who took over as Metropolitan Police Commissioner today, also condemned soft treatment for celebrities such as James Hewitt who are caught with drugs.

He said: "I do not think there are areas of the capital that are exempt from the law on drugs. I think sometimes people think their weekend wrap of 'charlie' is harm-free but not for much longer.

"People think it's okay but I do not think it's okay to use cocaine. I think we have to make a few examples of people so that they understand."
