What to do if it happens to you

12 April 2012

Since 1997, the law has defined harassment more clearly, making it easier to file a complaint even after only two or three incidents.

Security expert Niall Burns, who has organised a seminar in London this Friday to help employers and personnel managers deal with stalkers, gives this advice:

  1. Tell the police, making a note of the time and date of your call. Ask for a crime reference number and make sure you get the officer's name.
  2. Inform friends and family, who can assist in case of emergencies.
  3. Make your home more secure by improving locks and lighting. Think about installing an alarm with panic buttons.
  4. Be careful when giving out personal information, such as mobile numbers, home telephone numbers, e-mail and home addresses.
  5. Let your employer know that you are worried, and inform security.
  6. Buy a personal attack alarm.
  7. Make a note of all incidents, including times and dates.
  8. Keep all letters, emails and text messages, however horrible; they could be used as evidence.

Niall Burns's seminar is not open to the public, but if you would like to attend in a business capacity, telephone International Risk Control Ltd on 08700 702025.
