Down the cakehole: Matcha latte

10 April 2012

It looks like liquid gunk and tastes like a cross between a bitter green tea, a creamy caffè latte and a sweet hot chocolate. London's latest superfood drink is the Matcha latte.

Made like any other latte, the milk is steamed and frothed but instead of espresso, London's baristas are blending theirs with a teaspoonful of Matcha, a fine Japanese green tea powder supercharged with antioxidants and containing less caffeine than coffee (lalaniandco.com).

Too bitter? Drop in vanilla essence or manuka honey.

Matcha lattes - cupcakes and ice cream coming shortly - are available from South Kensington's Tartine bar (£2.75, tartine.co.uk) or Canary Wharf and Hammersmith branches of Café Brera from next week (£2.50, cafebrera.com). Want a natural high? Make it a Matcha one.
