Designer Alessandro Michele today defended the decision to unveil his latest Gucci collection in Westminster Abbey, saying he chose the site as “history is what is really cool”.

Today’s show in the 13th-century cloisters, attended by fashion insiders and celebrities from across the globe, has attracted criticism.

But the Italian told the Evening Standard: "Westminster is a piece of this city’s energy, something the contemporary world has forgotten."

The launch of Gucci’s 2017 cruise collection has the full support of the Dean of Westminster, who has called it "a new and exciting collaboration for us."

Priest and author the Reverend Peter Owen-Jones has questioned the idea of the show, saying: "It confuses what the Church is for."

"Is the central icon of Christianity there to offer spiritual sustenance and love or is it just part of the marketplace of capitalism?"
