Innovative, creative, rebellious; David Bowie was undoubtedly fashion’s king of self-re-invention.

Going from Mod teenager to a flare-wearing hippy with dishevelled curls, Bowie – born Jones – was known by many different names thanks to his numerous style personas.

In 1972 we were introduced to Ziggy Stardust; a glamorous rock star-come-alien with a burst of red hair who was created for the concept album 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars'.

In 1976 The Thin White Duke was born. A much sharper dresser than Stardust, the persona – created primarily for Bowie's album 'Station to Station' – was heavily inspired by Bowie's character Thomas Jerome Newton in the film 'The Man Who Fell to Earth'.

But perhaps his most easily recognisable character – and the one copied by Kate Moss on the cover of May 2003’s British Vogue – is Aladdin Sane, whose lightning bolt painted across one eye has been replicated by thousands of Bowie fans since his tragic passing in 2016.

Pushing the fashion boundaries to the highest degree, there weren't many styles Bowie didn't turn his hand to.

From skin-tight catsuits to embroidered dress coats, eye patches to shaved brows, to celebrate what would have been his 72nd birthday we take a look at the very best of the musician’s iconic looks.
