On Monday, the ultimate crowd of A-listers took to the Metropolitan Museum Of Art's Costume Institute Gala red carpet and put on a display of fashion-forward - albeit occasionally questionable - looks for their fellow style-savvy guests to appreciate.

This year's theme was 'China: Through The Looking Glass' which a number of attendees threw themselves into, showcasing an array of red shades and intricately-detailed embroidery.

Other guests took the occasion to show off a little creativity, with jaw-dropping looks introduced from all sides of extreme. Whether it were with excessive lengths of material - we're talking to you, Rihanna - or dresses that were barely there at all, the Gala did not let us down in its traditional spectacle-stakes.

Take a look at our pick of the best - and worst - looks from the New York event.
