No matter what you wear on top, shoes are key this season and there's no better occasion than New Year's Eve to show off your finery

While New Year's Eve can often be an over-estimated, over-planned and underwhelming night, your outfit doesn't have to be.

If you're lacking the inspiration to conjure up a whole new outfit after a month of relentless festivities, join the queue. But there's an easy solution and it involves your old best friend. Pull out that trusty little black dress and pack a punch on your feet. A bold pair of shoes, be they heeled or flat, sparkled or matte, is the secret to a powerful and memorable outfit with the least requirement for forethought.

Heading out for dinner with friends or that lucky individual is one of the few scenarios where the heal height can be as impractical as you like, providing you have several courses and book a taxi each way from right outside the restaurant door (a perfect evening, if you ask us).

For those of you who will be propping up the bar until the early hours with a glass of champagne in each hand, we suggest a dressy shoe with - and this bit is vitally important - a comfortable and forgiving heel. After all, you'll no doubt be looking to it for support (physical, not emotional... unless the champagne really hits you) towards the end of the night.

If you're heading to a generous friend's who is lending their house to your and your associates' inevitably jubilant celebratory behaviour then count yourself lucky. While heels would look a little overdone, your favourite Nikes may seem a little half-arsed. Meet in the middle and tszuj up your LBD with a pair of Russell & Bromley thigh high boots or, if you want to show off a little more leg, a sparkled flat à la ASOS and Saint Laurent.

Whatever the event, there's a shoe that fits.
