You won’t find any evidence on Instagram of the most revealing show of New York fashion week.

Phones were confiscated at the door of Rihanna’s second Savage X Fenty lingerie showcase that will further cement the pop star as one of the most powerful fashion players on the planet.

Footage will remain under wraps until it is streamed on September 20 as part of a lucrative deal with Amazon — but some sneak-peek pictures were released. The website is stocking the underwear range for the first time, and items are already available.

Undoubtedly fans will consider the wait to be worth it for 40 minutes of crowd-pleasing performances from hip hop stars Migos, DJ Khaled and A$AP Ferg and appearances from supermodels Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls. Hadid’s sister Bella was also in attendance, as was Delevingne’s girlfriend Ashley Benson.

Rihanna didn’t put on a musical performance, instead opening the show in a black lace unitard. She led a 40-strong dance troupe wearing her designs. They had been cast to emphasise the broad size range the collection offers — 32A to 42H in bras and XS-3X for briefs — as well as to affirm Rihanna’s view that beauty is an attitude.

The range featured lace bralettes, satin négligée dresses and silky gowns. With little to appeal to those who like their smalls on the oversized side, knickers and body suits were mostly sheer.

A colour palette spanning lime green to scarlet was punctuated with black and ivory.

Since turning her hand to fashion, Rihanna has won praise from the style elite for her disruptive and inclusive approach that prioritises the wants — and budgets — of her fans. Bras are priced at about £40 and briefs start from just over £10. Supporters at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn last night included US Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour and British Vogue’s Edward Enninful.

The show will be broadcast in full along with backstage insights and interviews. It is a savvy marketing strategy reminiscent of the one deployed by Victoria’s Secret lingerie, whose blockbuster show put its brand on the international map. Savage X Fenty is a collaborative venture between Rihanna and conglomerate Techstyle.

Earlier this year the Barbadian star, the world’s wealthiest female singer, became the first black woman to lead a fashion brand at the world’s largest luxury conglomerate, LVMH, when she established Fenty.
