Road test: Honda Civic Tourer 1.6

Tourer is top of the class for space, says Mike Stone

It’s no coincidence that the new Honda Civic Tourer’s load-lugging capacity tops not only its own class but that of the class above, too, because the firm hopes to lure downsizers who still want plenty of high tech safety systems as well as the 1,668 litres of loadspace.

The front of the car is unchanged from the Civic saloon, but from the windscreen back it’s all new and has an Adaptive Damper System on the rear suspension to maximise comfort and stability. As well as three ride settings, the system checks road surface and load every 10 milliseconds and adds as much or as little damping as required. The loadspace includes a 120-litre compartment below the boot floor, enabling the Tourer to carry objects up to a metre high. The “Magic” seating system allows rear seats to be configured in several ways and create a flat loading surface.

The car retains the same 1.6 diesel and 1.8 petrol engines as the saloon and is available only with manual transmission.
