David Williams: Learn how to make a splash when off-road

Capable: Land Rover Discovery Sport

I visited Land Rover’s 5,000-acre off-road proving ground at Eastnor Castle earlier this year — and was impressed by how its Discovery Sport tackled deep water, ruts and steep obstacles.

It seemed that the vehicle did most of the work itself.

But — as Tom Sheppard reveals in his updated book Four-by-Four Driving — there’s actually a whole world to learn about off-road driving, and knowing the right way to do it can make all the difference.

In this informative paperback, Sheppard says modern 4X4s carry a wealth of technology that makes them very able vehicles indeed, especially if you know how to use it properly.

As well as describing how 4X4 systems work, he gives useful off-road techniques including how to negotiate ridges, ditches, slopes, ice, water and sand. He talks readers through recovering a stuck vehicle and how to put a 4X4 expedition together.

It’s packed with detail and made me want to take the Discovery off-road again, to see what else it could do. It’s £28.50 from Desert Winds Publishing.
