Grant scheme for ultra-clean electric cars - extended

The government has extended its grant scheme for ultra-clean electric cars to February 2016.

The announcement comes in the wake of figures showing that 256% more of these vehicles were registered in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2014.

Under the scheme, a grant of £5000 is available towards the cost of a new electric car emitting less than 75g/km of CO2.

Britain’s most popular plug-in hybrid is the The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Commenting on the extension to the grant scheme, Mitusbishi UK’s MD Lance Bradley said: "We welcome the government’s decision to continue these incentives in a way which recognises the fledgling nature of this low-emissions market.

"We have seen ultra-low emission vehicles establish a 1% share of UK sales – in a period of time unprecedented in automotive terms."

For the government, Transport Minister Andrew Jones MP pointed out that sales of electric vehicles are growing faster in the UK than anywhere else in the EU. A further announcement on the grant scheme’s future is expected in November as part of the annual government spending review.
