The Venice Film Festival is where summer ends and awards season begins.

The oldest film festival in the world - the first one took place in 1932 - sees Hollywood's finest hit the historic Italian city to premiere movies they're hoping will make it all the way to the Oscars shortlist. This year's contenders include Timothee Chalamet's The King and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.

Stars including Brad Pitt, Liv Tyler, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern have already hit the red carpet for the premieres of Ad Astra and Marriage Story.

But way back when, Elizabeth Taylor made multiple appearances at the film festival. She appeared with Richard Burton in 1963, as well as in 1967 alongside Italian actress Claudia Cardinale for a charity ball. It was the perfect setting to show off her extravagant jewelry collection.

And of course, the always glamorous Sophia Loren was a regular and still is to this day. The 84-year-old icon is known for her memorable appearances at the festival, including her elegant 1958 ensemble which is now a popular Pinterest pin.
