A classic of the côte

On the rocks: the Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc, with its infinity pool forged into the cliffs
10 April 2012

Once fabled for not accepting credit cards - fittingly super-rich guests schlepped around with large wads of cash with which to settle bills - the Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc in Cap d'Antibes re-opens on April 15 after a 45million restoration project.

This is the first major revamp since the Fifties, although the hotel first opened its doors in 1870. Since its heyday, cash-carrying guests have ranged from Sinatra and Picasso to Madonna, Brad and Angelina.

The hotel has five new deluxe rooms and two new suites. All rooms are upgraded with LED TV screens with added technology - iPod players and wi-fi - private bars and bathrooms decked out in pink marble from Portugal and Marfil. For the ultimate privacy, Villa Eleana, with two floors, three bedrooms, and its own pool, opened in 2010.

One thing that hasn't changed is the infinity pool forged into the cliffs along the rugged coast with views of the Lerins Islands and Cannes Bay.
