Destination Switzerland: Swiss chalet goes chic

Alpine dream: bedrooms at the Nira Alpina have fantastic views
10 April 2012

In a departure from traditional alpine chalet-style, Nira Alpina, opening early December, will be a contemporary glass and timber built ski-in, ski-out hotel complete with a private, glassed-in covered walkway leading to the Corvatsch cable car.

Set into the mountainside, in a hamlet overlooking Lake Silvaplana in the Engadine valley, all 70 rooms have balcony, terrace or garden space and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Glassy minimalism merges with more traditional local materials such as wood and granite. Public spaces include chill-out areas, two restaurants, a bar with cigar lounge, outside terrace, central open fireplace and a library.

The Nira Spa, using spa brands Alpiene and Spiezia Organics, will offer treatments including clay wraps, sports massage, hot stone massage and a gym. A free shuttle service will run into Surlej, Silvaplana and nearby St Moritz.

Doubles from £350 B&B or three-night ski package from £1,350 half-board (for two people), one after-ski drink pp, two-day Corvatsch ski pass, one-day ski rental (without boots) and spa access, niraalpina.ch
