What we are going to do here is combine a smoky eye with an on-trend eye. We’re going to cultivate a moody eye. A changeable, intriguing eye. A party eye. A pulling eye. We are going to do this via MAC’s Fig. 1 eye shadow. Here’s why:
1) A smoky eye is slightly stickier territory than make-up people care to admit. It does not suit everyone, depending entirely on complexion and eye shape. Almond eyes, fine. Round eyes, not so hot.
2) A smoky eye is not idiot-proof. No matter how many brands include diagrams in their palettes, it’s a scary affair involving liquids, powders and all manner of brushes to define, blend and — more often than not — correct. Unless you are a natural rock chick.
3) Purple is the shade of the season but must be approached with caution. There’s purple — then there’s purple.
That’s why I love MAC’s Fig. 1 eye shadow. This particular shade is the colour of a fig rather than an insane, electric purple. It is totally matte, and flattering to ease up into the crease of the eyelid and then wing outwards, elongating angles the way a good smoky eye should. It can be bold but blends down to a light-rejecting, contouring stroke of genius.
Fig. 1 fakes it. Wings it. Gives the impression of proper purple and the illusion of serious smoke without actually jumping into bed with either. Remember that this party season.
